Floriade 2022 in Almere is being postponed or canceled due to the corona crisis

Due to the corona crisis, the Floriade 2022 must be postponed or canceled. The municipality of Almere is also investigating whether the world horticultural exhibition can continue in a much smaller form.

The work for the Floriade, which should already be in full swing, is halted. At the moment, according to the municipality of Almere, it is also impossible to estimate what the effects of the corona outbreak will be in the long term and worldwide. That is why an advisor will let you know in early May whether the exhibition should be postponed, adjusted or can proceed in a smaller form.
The consultant must find out what “the advantages and disadvantages, the financial and legal consequences and the risks” of the three options are. On Thursday, the consultant will speak behind closed doors with the Municipal Executive and the city council about the fulfillment of his assignment.

Spatial design

The Floriade in Almere has a budget of approximately 100 million euros, but continuing with the original ambitions is no longer realistic, according to the municipality. An area of sixty hectares has been reserved along the A6 motorway. The previous Floriade in 2012 in Venlo was left with a loss of more than nine million euros.
Various designers are involved in the plans. For example, MVRDV is responsible for the spatial design of the plans and Winy Maas fulfills the role of  supervisor . As part of the master plan, 70F designed a solar panel roof over the highway . In addition, two circular bridges will be  designed by Reimert Bouw and Infrastructuur.
